About the boy (i.e. me)

My name is Mike Marren and I’ve been an inhabitant of Earth since 1962.

I’m married, have three adult children and live in Perth, Western Australia, sometimes known as the most isolated capital city in the world.

This blog started on 6 August 2016 and in the 14 months since I’ve written nearly 300 film reviews.

I did a short introductory piece about myself back then (which is still in the posts section if you can be bothered) but people have told me you need something about you on the home page.

I don’t write reviews within any particular time of seeing a film or publish them on any particular day; just when they are ready.

I have a journalism degree and worked as a newspaper journalist for 20-odd years before taking the usual progression in Australia through government media to public relations and now corporate affairs.

I have written one film script, a horror/ghost story, and am working on another, an action/thriller. Attempts to bring the first script to the film world’s attention were not successful (what a surprise).

My favourite genre is horror but my favourite film is the 1953 drama On The Waterfront. The reviews range far and wide across most genres, but drama figures most.

I try to see most of the major new releases and have at least one weekly trip to the cinema, where all movies should be seen for the first time.

Otherwise most of my viewings are a mix of blu-ray and Foxtel. I find the picture quality on Netflix very uneven, but the film selection is getting better.

Because I don’t have young children, I rarely review kids or family movies; I think the last was the Batman Lego Movie.

Otherwise, I’ll see just about anything, from The Human Centipede to The Mountain Between Us. I’m less interested in documentaries.

I try to look for the good aspects of most movies. I know it’s very entertaining to read reviews that slam movies; I won’t hold back, but I will always note the good stuff as well.

Rarely is a movie terrible and, if I suspect it’s going to be, I just won’t watch it.

For example, I recently noticed 1.5 star reviews for The Snowman. That’s ridiculous click bait.

It was a narrative mess, but I still gave it 2.5 for the sheer quality of other aspects of the film-making.

You cannot tell me that The Snowman is critically on a par with something like Girls Trip.

So that’s it. I love movies and hope my passion comes through and maybe you find something you will like.
