First Lady as action hero

G20 ★★½

VIOLA Davis is a wonderfully versatile actress, capable of making an impact in everything from powerful dramas to light comedy.

In 2022’s The Woman King she took on the role of an action hero and also killed it (pardon the pun).

In G20 she again enters the action genre but with less success.

While it’s great to see a middle-aged woman running around Die Hard style and beating the crap out of bad guys, G20 is ultimately a typical, contemporary action thriller.

Davis plays a former war hero who is now President of the United States and hosting an international summit of world leaders at an exclusive resort location.

The script tries to give Davis’s character depth but isn’t truly successful. It also lazily sets up the scenario for a terrorist attack, led by a rogue Australian soldier played by Anthony Starr, best known from the television series The Boys (he plays super villain Homelander) and Banshee.

This character, Rutledge, seems to be pissed off about government generally, but his motivations are never made totally clear.

Still, the action is what counts and there is plenty of it, although of course you know we are going to eventually wind up with the usual fight to the death between the main adversaries.

G20 isn’t bad; but watch Davis in The Woman King instead. She’s excellent.

Watched on Prime.
