Top Ten of 1978

TWO very different Vietnam War dramas are in my Top Ten Films of 1978.

The Deer Hunter. Great sequence – Russian Roulette

Midnight Express. Great sequence – Billy Hayes attacks the informer.

Halloween. One of the best horror films ever made; the Daddy of modern slashers.

Coming Home. The under-rated Jon Voight’s best performance.

Animal House. Comedian John Belushi in career-defining form.

Capricorn One. A fascinating premise told with skill and flair.

The Boys from Brazil. Great sequence – Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier in a tooth and claw fight.

The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. An under-rated Australian classic that still resonates today.

The Fury. Brian De Palma in great B-grade Stephen King form.

The Wild Geese. Veterans Roger Moore, Richard Burton and Richard Harris are mercenaries for hire in Africa.
