Snatched ★★★
MOTHER’S Day movies have certainly evolved.
Years ago they were probably flocking to see The Sound of Music or My Fair Lady; in more recent times, Pretty Woman, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually.
Last year (2016) I recall the big release on the day was Bad Moms and this year we have the sex and relationship driven comedy of Amy Schumer in Snatched.
Never thought I would say this but, unlike her first main feature Trainwrecked, this film is almost suitable for the whole family.
The excesses of Schumer’s comedy, which are very good anyway, are dialled back just enough to allow you to take your mum along, regardless of her age.
Schumer’s die-hard fans may be a little disappointed as a result, but there are still moments of her trademark humour. While the film is rated MA, it only just deserves that rating.
The film cleverly uses Goldie Hawn’s character to keep any excesses in check. Let me explain.
Schumer’s character is planning a holiday in Ecuador with her boyfriend but he dumps her with just days to go. The tickets are non-refundable and she can’t find anyone else to go with.
She reluctantly turns to her mother, played by Goldie Hawn, who only agrees to go because she is concerned about her daughter’s safety travelling alone and her generally naive attitude when it comes to men.
Of course, as the title states, they are kidnapped and held for ransom. While Schumer’s brother tries the diplomatic route, the girls attempt to escape on several occasions.
Thankfully the trailer doesn’t spoil the film completely and there are enough remaining jokes to make the film an enjoyable romp.
The greatest strength of the film is the performances, particular Schumer and the effervescent Hawn whom we really don’t see enough from on screen these days.
The pair work well together and the film does not over-sentimentalise as many of these American comedies do.
See it with your mum; she should enjoy it.
