onthewaterfront-01EVERY film blog needs a Top 10 Favourite Movies. How else are you going to decide whether the host is worth reading.

So here is mine, in order as of this moment in time. Full reviews will follow:

1 On the Waterfront (1954). Directed by Elia Kazan. Marlon Brando takes on the teamsters union and wins the heart of Eva Marie Saint. Great scene: Brando walking with Saint and holding her glove.

2 The Exorcist (1973). Directed by William Friedkin. An ancient demon and Max von Sydow battle for the soul of a young girl. Great scene: Jason Miller sees his mother in the crowd.

3 The Godfather (1972). Directed by Francis Ford Coppolla. The epic saga of the mafia in America. Great scene: the door closes on Diane Keaton.

4 Stars Wars (1977). Directed by George Lucas. The great fantasy adventure; I saw it twice the day it was released. Great scene: Darth Vader uses the force on one of his men.

5 Annie Hall (1977). Directed by Woody Allen. A wonderful romantic comedy by the master of neurosis, still going strong today. Great scene: catching lobsters in the kitchen.

6 Goodfellas (1990). Directed by Martin Scorcese. The second greatest gangster saga (after The Godfather). Great scene: dropping in for spaghetti at mum’s place, between murders.

7 Jaws (1976). Directed by Steven Spielberg. The first great monster movie featuring a real-life threat. Great scene: Quint recites the story of the Indianapolis

8 The Deerhunter (1978). Directed by Michael Cimino. Is it pro or anti-war? The skill and power of the film is that you’re not quite sure. Great scene: Russian roulette.

9 Taxi Driver (1976). Directed by Martin Scorcese. Robert de Niro at his most magnificent. Great scene: Taking a date to the movies.

10 Betty Blue (1986). Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix. The sexiest, tragic romance I have seen. Great scene: Betty and Zorg entertain friends.

    Hey Jason,
hope things are all good. yep, maybe James Caan getting gunned down at the toll booth or of course the horse’s head. Anything from that movie really

Great list! Technically the door closing on Diane Keaton was in The Godfather part II. In its place, I nominate Al Pacino eating dinner in the Bronx with Sollozzo and Capt. McCluskey.
