From old nazis to new romantics – 2016’s top 5 to now

midnight_special_one_sheetMY TOP five movies of 2016 to date, in no particular order, spans science fiction, thriller, comedy, comic book and musical.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL: Sci-fi thriller directed by Jeff Nicholas (Mud, Take Shelter) and starring two of my favourite actors, Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton. Critics’ reviews were good, but few people saw it during a limited run in Perth

GREEN ROOM: Punk band members forced to fight their way out of an abandoned warehouse through a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads led by Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek and X-Men). Again, limited run at Luna but it’s out on blu-ray next week

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE: Wonderful family comedy from New Zealand by the team behind Boy and What We Do In The Shadows. Great role for Sam Neill. Still running at some cinemas in Perth.

DEAD POOL: Best comic book movie of the year, hands-down. Ryan Reynolds is definitely choosing better roles in recent years. What Suicide Squad should have been.

SING STREET: Joyous comedy musical set in 1980s Dublin with great performances and two great love stories, boy and girl and boy and brother. Still on at Luna.
